Diphtheria is a highly contagious, bacteria infected, disease that can cause inflammation of the Mucous Membrane, which further causes difficulties in breathing due to the swollen membrane in the throat and fatal heart and nerve damage caused by a bacterial toxin that enters the blood stream. This disease has thankfully now become rare due to modern day immunization. The scientific name for Diphtheria is C. diphtheria.
